Steam Download Multiple Games At Once

Valve will be adding a new service entitled Family Sharing to Steam, allowing users to share a game with household members across multiple accounts.

Here's how it works: One person authorises a computer to share their Steam library with any so-called family members using the same machine. The other family members will then be able to access the lender's games on their own account where they can earn their own Steam achievements and store their own saves.

Simultaneous usage of an account's library is not allowed, however. The lender will always have access to their library - be it on the shared machine or another device - while the borrower will have a few minutes to either purchase a shared title or quit if the original owner attempts to access their Steam library at the same time.

My download speed hits its maximum potential when downloading multiple games though, it is slightly slower on single download cases.

Steam users will be able to enable Family Sharing on up to 10 devices per account.

A few other details: Not all games can be shared, as some require third-party subscription keys. Additionally, DLC can be shared by a lender, but a borrower cannot buy DLC for someone else's game. So if you're playing a friend's copy of, say, The Binding of Isaac and you want to buy the Wrath of the Lamb expansion, you'll have to pony up and buy the base game yourself.

Why Is My Steam Download So Slow

'Our customers have expressed a desire to share their digital games among friends and family members, just as current retail games, books, DVDs, and other physical media can be shared,' said Valve's Anna Sweet. 'Family Sharing was created in direct response to these user requests.'

When trying to download more than one game at once (Cogs and Frozen Synapse in my case), Steam will fail to download them both. As soon as the second game is selected to download, the first pauses. If you unpause it so that both should be downloading at the same time, neither game will download. It will just sit there, acting like they're paused, when they're not.

On windows I don't I ever saw steam download more than 1 game at once. All are paused except for one. Maybe there's a bug here that is causing the download to fail instead of just pausing, but i think it's a 'by design' decision for steam to not download more than 1 game at once.

@mewt666 I was always able to download multiple games on Windows. When I buy Humble Bundles in particular, I download every game at once overnight so I can play them in the morning. I always checked to make sure they were all downloading, and sure enough, every game was downloading together.

Steam Game Won't Download

My experience is that on Windows, it used to download in parallel, but since a recent update the client only downloads one game at a time. I'm guessing this is done on purpose to limit the number of concurrent connections to valve servers.

GCF and NCF games could download simultaneously, but the newer ACF format will only ever download one at a time. All NCF games are slowly being transitioned to ACF (this is now largely complete - at least for the 250+ games I own), which is why 'recently' you very rarely see multiple games downloading at the same time.

The change to just a single active download is an intentional change, so I'm closing this.
