The opening scene made the film seem promising. But as soon as it's over the movie drops right down to lame. The dialogue is over dramatic and boring. Several of the sets used in this movie are really cheap and unbelievable. I kept waiting and waiting for the movie to pick up but it maintained a steady slow boring pace. I want to watch a movie with constant substance throughout. These lame drama movies filled with emotional over dramatic dialogue conveying over dramatic 'blah blah blah' are just so bloody lame. One scene with a crying baby was so hard to watch because it was clear that this was a prop baby crying and pulling away from the actor reaching for it's real parent off set. 80% of the movie is just emotional glut with the actors moaning on over slow depressing background music. I dredged through 50 long painful minutes of this B-grade waste of time waiting for something to happen to make up for all the lameness of it, but it never happened. I stopped watching it. Terrible.

It's an open secret that a lot of anime fans are engaged in criminal activity. A lot of anime fans - maybe even here in r/anime are consuming products they haven't paid for. Obviously a horrendous state of affairs and the death of the industry.

Or is it?

In 2010, the German anime industry was struggling to grow. Anime were too expensive for the target group, who instead took the path of illegal measures to get their fix of East Asian animation. The product wasn't selling, but was illegally consumed to a large degree. Some companies would've seen the surface causality and tried to curb down on illegal consumers.

However, German anime distributors chose a different path.

1080p

Several German companies, among them publishers, got together with German fansubbers and founded the Anime Copyright Allianz (ACA). Instead of pursuing illegal consumers, they encouraged subbers to sub anime that are not licensed and asked them to take down subs for anime that are. Furthermore they declared that regardless of actions no anime will be pursued by the companies of the ACA.

Michael Wache, managing director of the VoD-portal Anime on Demand and coordinator of the initiative, emphasizes:

'The Anime Copyright Allianz will not initiate legal steps against consumers of illegal copies or against people that upload anime illegally to video portals. Previous experiences of the media industry with campaigns against copyright violations brought us to the insight that promotion of copyright-conform behaviour can only succeed if all actors - fans, content providers and media - pull together.

Aggressive

The German way is not to fight piracy head-on, but to work together with fans for a better tomorrow.

Publisher Kazé cooperated directly with fans subbers and had them create the subtitles for series such as Nisekoi and Hamatora.

The biggest German site for illegal anime is to this day holding onto this and refrains from serving licensed content, removing an anime in German as soon as it gets licensed. Instead, they directly link to the legal alternatives. English subs are available, because the German publisher don't view them as direct competitor as they target German fans that want to watch their anime dubbed in German or with German subtitles.

There was an issue, once, with Blood-C. Some torrent pirates of the anime Blood-C had a bad time when they got a letter one day telling them to pay a compensation of 5,000 Euro. It turned out that the publisher's parent company had an external law firm that was dealing with torrents specifically and that took a bite. The company responsible for the copyright then promised to get into talks with their clients to make clear that punishment is not the way to go. Nothing has been heard since then, but we haven’t had another Blood-C incident since then, so I suppose that this was a fluke.

Is this method of cooperation between companies and fans good in the end? Would the anime industry in Germany be a lot bigger if the companies would've curbed down on pirates? Well, to answer this, we would need to ask someone from another timeline. However, what we can say is, that the anime and manga industry in Germany is quite strong.

Needless

Despite rampant ongoing piracy, anime and manga get licenced in large amounts. Hamburg main station is home to a bookstore that has a large manga section, two long tables and eight bookcases full of manga, Hamburg's electronic store Saturn has a sizable anime section, with DVDs, Blu-Rays and figurines. There are three dedicated anime and manga stores in Hamburg, and we have magazines like AnimaniA (Anime specific), Koneko (Japanese Culture in general), Toxic Sushi (Japanese Culture) and Doki Doki (Yaoi magazine), there are several legal streaming platforms that simulcast (to the dismay of many fans as simulcasts are spread out between a lot of services).

It's up to you to judge whether this looks like an unhealthy industry that is ravaged by piracy.

USA: 1337-ONE-PIECE

The United States of America had a quite amusing story about copyright that stuck with me. Japanese company Toei got impatient with piracy and demanded Funimation to crack down on pirates. Funimation then sued exactly 1337 torrenters of an episode of One Piece.

On another matter, the Fractale Production Committee had forced Funimation to stop the simulcast of the series after episode 1 to stop piracy. The condition was to remove all illegal streams and downloads. However, the simulcast was later continued as the committee realized that not simulcasting did nothing to stop pirated copies and that piracy became more prominent as fans were denied a legal method of access.

While the western distributors are rather lenient and sometimes openly supportive of pirating fans, things look different in the homeland of anime. Japan has no love for pirates and automated systems also recently employed a dedicated pirate hunter and calls for 'emergency blockade' of websites that illegally distribute manga and anime.

The increasing prevalence of comic book piracy prompted some manga creators’ groups to publish statements warning of the issue. Tokyo-based Manga Japan claimed that the manga industry may “eventually perish” if the situation continues.

But blocking individual sites may not be a stable solution, as a Mangamura copycat has already been launched.

The government regards the move as a temporary measure until it establishes a law to crack down on piracy, including banning so-called leech sites, which aggregate links to illegal copies of manga, music, videos and other files uploaded to other websites.

The government will also seek to develop a legal basis in 2019 to restrict access to piracy websites.

Japan also has the Manga-Anime Guardians (MAG) Project that was formed in 2014. An initiative created by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry that aims to curb down on piracy by information and enforcement by legal action.

In short

Piracy is a historical part of the western anime community as access to anime was until recently very restricted by the limited amount of anime that were licenced locally. Pirates took matters in their own hands and brought anime over, getting people interested in series that wouldn't have made it here through distributors. Crunchyroll, the biggest English site for simulcasts used to be a piracy site and grew to what it is with the interest of fans in a wide variety of anime.

While there are a lot of legal alternatives, there are still reasons for people to pirate, such as availability. Not all anime are even legally aquireable in some countries.

There are people who only pirate and that never give back to the industry, which would not be sustainable if it was only such people. However, despite easy methods to get anime and manga through illegal means and despite companies outside of Japan being relaxed about this piracy, the industry is growing. From my experience, a sizable portion of fans that pirate also engage in buying anime, manga, merchandise and subscriptions of legal services, they participate in discussions, creation of fan works and events such as theatrical screenings and conventions.

What are your experiences with piracy? How are the companies in your country handle pirating fans? If you pirate, do you give back to the industry in some ways?

I would also like to remind everyone that links and mentioning of specific piracy sites are not allowed by the sub rules.
