Hi GT4U

1) What devices do not work?

My first suggestion would be to load the Toshiba Restore/Driver disks that came with your laptop. Load the drivers for the SD Card reader and the TI card reader from the recovery disk set.

Also you may refer the links to update the drivers.

Update a driver for hardware that isn't working properly

Update drivers: recommended links

If the card reader doesn't work, try TI Card Reader Driver for Windows XP/Vista/7 (32/64) from the link below;

Let me know for any further assistance.

That may be a poorly named card reader. Look for a SD card reader driver.

I looked up SD card reader, but what I find is for a USB port driver. Is that the same thing? My problem is that when I put a disc in the tray, it doesn't do anything. Once I got a message that there was no mass storage controller but that was the only time. System restore does nothing, and I can't recall if it was ever in the Device Manager but it's not there now.

Your computer is very old for a laptop:

Please answer as many of these questions as you can. Maybe I can advise you. The more complete the information, the more likely I can help you

I have a 2004 Toshiba laptop with Windows 7 Professional OS. 32 bit with service pack 1. The serial number is PSAA8U-0FH02K.

The hard drive serial number is HTS54101069SA00ATA. The disk capacity is 93.1 GB with 31.9 GB used and 61.2 GB free. The memory capacity is 2.00 GB. I looked at the CD-DVD driver and I guess the ID is 6.1.7601.17514. I really can't remember if I saw a mass storage controller driver in the device manager or not because it's been a long time since I used the Toshiba. I gave it to my daughter to have and she said the compact disc player wouldn't work anymore, whether for music. movies, or games , so I'm trying to see what I can do. She has Spotify on it. Also a few Nancy Drew games off of discs, a Solitaire game--Pretty Good Solitaire it's called, it's a download. WildTangent game app,BigFish game app. There's SuperAntiSpyware, Windows Defender and an uninstaller, and a maintenance program called Advanced System Care. Just basic things.

You need to get the machine in your hands so you can answer the questions and take the actions.

In broad terms, consider the possibility that the hard drive is failing. Laptop hard drives have a life expectancy of about 5 years. The specific problems you may be having may not be due to this, but consider the possible course of action being a new hard drive and a re-install of Windows. You can buy a new HD for about $60 or so and although it is a long task, it is quite possible for a user to do as long as he is able to follow directions very precisely. If you wish to do this, I can advise you. -- just ask.

In the mean time, get the PC and answer the question, please

The bottom line is that best I can tell from your answers, the laptop and hard drive is 15 years old. At that age, consider yourself lucky it still works at all. Your next step is to replace the hard drive or replace the system. If you wish to replace the hard drive and want to do it yourself, just let me know and I can provide you with instructions. However, quite honestly, at 15 years, I don't think it is worth it.
