Why won't my windows 8 apps or updates install? I have tried several times installing 29 updates available in the store and an app. It gets as far as stating that the app or update is pending installation, then stops.

My All-in-One Dell will not install updates, specifically KB2961908, KB2990967, and KB2919355. It just downloads, tries to install, and then uninstalls them. I have run sfc/ scannow, but it states that it could not fix some files. I've run the Windows 8 troubleshooter and it says it fixes the problem, but these updates still don't install. Malwarebytes doesn't find any corrupt files.
A website that I googled said these Windows 8.1 updates should be installed in this order: KB2919442, KB2919355, KB2932046, KB2937592, KB2938439, and KB2934018. KB2919442 is the only one that is installed on my machine. I need some guidance so I can update my desktop.

For several days (since April 29) Windows Defender has been unable to update its virus/spyware definitions. Everytime I try to update it, I receive a message saying 'The virus and spyware definitions didn't update on (date + time) because of an internet or network connectivity problem.' Trying to update it via Windows Update is also unsuccessful.
It appears that the updates have been downloaded but will not install; the first time I try to update, the program tells me that it is downloading, but fails when it tries to install. I haven't received any other updates for Windows yet, so I don't know if this is just a problem with Defender.
