It is a shame Grace's her gifts does not live up. To get a film using a custody case in the heart of its storyline, Gifted is inert. The takeaways about gifted kids are well-trodden, the plot twists hardly twisty. There are moments that are profound, especially in places where Evans and Duncan do battle out of court as mom and son, but there are not enough of them to make Gifted, well.
There's really a good deal to commend in director Marc Webb's male weepie of a boat-repairman named Frank who's raising his seven-year-old niece Mary - the twist being that the girl is a genius-level math prodigy and God-grade precocious moppet, the sort that blurts out both numerical square roots and smartass solutions easily. There is the off-the-graphs display chemistry between Evans and costar Jenny Slate, playing Mary's teacher and, unavoidably, the romantic attraction.

There is a young performer who's already figured out how you can act for the camera, Grace, and more impressively, the way to radiate intellect without seeming like there is someone's feeding her collegiate calculus answers offstage. There is a sequence in which the kid and her defender discuss why she is not like other kids, place in a sundown-shape shot that's simply breathtaking. You get the always-welcome Octavia Spencer as a neighbor that is loving. And say hello to Sherlock's wonderful Lindsay Duncan as the world's most glacial grandma, who wants to whisk Mary away to a gifted-child school and give the blue blood life that is her heritage to her.

Even the fact that the film borrows heavily from Good Will Hunting, Five Easy Pieces, family tragedies, custody battle courtroom dramas, other Fox Searchlight feel-good flicks and every third egghead-vs.-just folks class conflict you've ever seen - it is absolutely forgivable. Except screenwriter and Webb Tom Flynn are not able to resist the temptation of milking instants for greatest heart string-battery impact, to the point where you're able to practically visit a great movie drowning.

Reaction shots to cherished wisdom literally coming from your mouth of babes arrive in triplicate. Reunion scenes will drag those teardrops out of your eyes or die trying. Everything gets boiled down to some reductive emotional semaphore. Even Evans' ex-philosophy professor isn't simply a grease monkey fleeing Northeastern aristocracy, he's a 'damaged, hot type' with a halo; having already played a superhero, the celebrity is now called on to be a saint. There is a soul-tune singalong and a freaking one-eyed cat in the combination. Cuteness reigns.
